Description
“The Bird, a nest. The Spider, a web. Man, friendship”
-William BlakeThis nest was located in a small bush, at about 2 feet from the ground.
It was well hidden from aerial predators but, sadly looks like it fell prey to a cat, or fox, or some other mammal; since it was empty when I returned only two days later.
I am new at this type of activity, so it saddened and surprised me to realize that so many nests get raided.
So far, I can report three red-winged blackbirds nest that got raided, two of which that did before hatching time.
I am looking at another two that are going strongly, with nestlings that are close to leaving the nest.
Red-winged blackbirds are the most common birds near the pond that I like to visit most but, I have also seen two crow fledglings, a pileated woodpecker still in the nest, tons of duckling (mallards and wood) and a young chickadee so far this Spring.
I also have seen a Northen flickers nest as well as a red-shouldered hawks nest but, have not seen any of their young ones.
